Current Elder Appointee

Scott Johnson

Read below for more information.

“The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock…” (1 Peter 5:1-3).
As referenced in the passage above, a shepherd is one of the word-pictures that describes an elder’s role in the local church. The elder is to watch over the congregants of the church like a shepherd watches over the flock--leading them by providing for them and protecting them. At Landmark Church we believe the Bible prescribes a leadership model of plurality of elders that are under the divine oversight of the Chief Shepherd, Jesus. These under-shepherds are charged by the Lord to make decisions concerning the overall direction, discipline, and doctrine of the church.

After over a year of walking through the elder process (details at www.thelandmark.church/eldership), the elder board of Landmark has publicly appointed Scott Johnson as an elder. This took place during our services on Sunday, October 6th, and will be announced again during our service on Wednesday, October 9th. Scott oversees the Jehovah Jireh Children’s Home in South Africa, as well as our efforts with Landmark Bible College in India. Through these partnerships, Scott (and Michelle) have become capable and faithful ministers within our community.

As part of the final steps, we invite your feedback. If you believe Scott does not meet the biblical qualifications for elder, as outlined in 1 Timothy and Titus, you have a 2-week window to share this information. Please use the form below to submit any and all feedback. All concerns must be submitted in writing and backed by credible sources or witnesses (1 Timothy 5:19).
We have thoroughly evaluated Scott’s qualifications and believe he is well-suited for this role. We look forward to formally ordaining him during a Sunday church service following this consideration period.

On a personal note, I am deeply encouraged by the church’s posture and passion. The Lord has been gracious to us, and it is our duty to faithfully steward what He has entrusted to us. Remember, Satan despises a healthy church, and where truth reigns, opposition will arise. Thus, let us guard our fellowship by remaining alert, compassionate, and rooted in Christ.

On behalf of the elders, thank you for your trust.

By God’s Grace Alone,
Matthew Maher
