First-Degree Premeditated Christianity: Faith On Trial

This study is based on the sermon titled First-Degree Premeditated Christianity: Faith On Trial by Matthew Maher below.

Sermon Study

In this powerful message based on  2 Timothy 3:12–15, Pastor Matthew Maher reminds us that in an evil age, the spiritual algorithm of the world rewards deception, chaos, and opposition to truth. To be led by the Spirit of Christ is to live in direct conflict with the spirit of the age, and that conflict often results in persecution—not just socially, but legally. Paul’s words to Timothy make it clear: persecution isn’t hypothetical for the godly; it’s inevitable. The message challenges believers to imagine if faith were a crime—would there be enough evidence to convict us? A life marked by Scripture, repentance, Christ-like speech, and sacrificial love would speak volumes in a world determined to silence righteousness.

The sermon paints a sobering picture of cultural decay, where evil doesn’t just exist—it escalates. False teachers multiply, and deception deepens. Paul isn’t warning about sudden destruction, but a gradual collapse fueled by lies. Yet in this descent, the call to Christians is clear: don’t compromise—continue. Continue in the truth you’ve learned, grounded in the Word that has shaped you. Spiritual strength doesn’t come from chasing what’s new but standing firm in what’s eternal. In a world obsessed with progress, believers are called not to evolve with culture but to grow deep in the doctrine that remains unchanged.

Pastor Matthew closes by anchoring hope in the power and longevity of Scripture. Timothy’s faith was generational—it was taught, modeled, and lived. The same Scriptures that raised him are able to raise us: making us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. In a world of noise, truth doesn’t shout; it endures. We’re not called to graduate from the Bible but to grow within it—abiding in its truth and letting it shape every part of our lives. When the culture drifts, the church must dig deeper. Conviction isn’t forged in comfort—it’s proven in pursuit.

Discussion Questions

  •   Persecution & Faithfulness (2 Tim. 3:12): What forms of persecution do believers face today—both subtle and overt? Have you personally experienced this tension when living for Christ?

  • If Christianity Were a Crime… If you were charged with “First-Degree Premeditated Christianity,” what visible evidence in your life would support the claim? What might be lacking?

  • Deception Multiplies (2 Tim. 3:13): How does deception grow over time in a society? What’s one lie you’ve seen go from fringe to mainstream?

  • Abiding vs. Visiting the Word (John 8:31–32): Are you abiding in the Word—or just visiting it? What changes could help you stay rooted in truth throughout the week?

  • Growing In, Not Beyond, the Bible: What does it mean to be a “perpetual student” of Scripture? Have you ever been tempted to move beyond basic truth rather than grow deeper into it?

  • Rooted from Childhood (2 Tim. 3:15): How has early exposure to God’s Word shaped your spiritual walk—or what effect has its absence had?

  • Generational Faith (2 Tim. 1:5): Who played a “Lois” or “Eunice” (or “Paul”) role in your life? How can you be that person for someone else?
